AWS announces Availability of Amazon AppStream 2.0 in the Europe (London) Region

Amazon AppStream 2.0 is now generally available in the AWS Europe (London) Region.

AppStream 2.0 is a fully managed, non-persistent desktop and application virtualization service that runs on AWS. AppStream 2.0 helps you securely stream applications and data online across the globe without acquiring, provisioning, and operating infrastructure. You can scale your desktops and applications on demand and your users can access corporate resources anywhere, anytime, from any supported device. AppStream 2.0 offers pay-as-you-go pricing that allows you to pay for the streaming resources that you use in addition to a small monthly fee per streaming user. There are no upfront investments and no long-term commitments while using this service.

With availability of the service in London, customers can provision AppStream 2.0 closer to their users and data, providing faster application runtime. AppStream 2.0 is built on a global network of AWS Regions and Availability Zones. This allows you to access your applications from anywhere. The University of East London (UEL) and Keele University have both recently tested AppStream 2.0 in London, to deliver applications to staff and students quickly and securely.

University of East London

The University of East London (UEL) is dedicated to helping support students to develop their skills, emotional intelligence and creativity. Historically, UEL has used an on-premises remote app system and VPN to grant users access to their central student application system. They adopted Amazon AppStream 2.0 to rapidly expand their capabilities in order to better support their streaming requirements.

Our students can seamlessly access a wide range of remote learning applications from almost any device. Early indications are that we are able to deliver a 7x performance improvement. This has significantly reduced latency in running reports against our student record system – SITS. AppStream 2.0 provides greater security, agility and the ability to quickly scale instances up or down to meet the changing needs of the business.”

Keele University

Keele University is based in Staffordshire, UK and is known for its breadth of teaching and research. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020, Keele University started using AWS to host their applications and web services, including using Amazon AppStream 2.0 to allow secure access to applications online.

We successfully tested our student record system, hosted on AppStream 2.0 and experienced a 9x improvement in latency.
