How do I change the name on my AWS account?

I want to change my AWS account name.

Short description

Your AWS account name is the name that appears in the AWS Management Console next to your account ID. You choose this name when you first create the account, but you can update the name through the AWS Billing and Management console.

Changing an account name is a task that requires root user credentials. Only the AWS account root user can modify the AWS account name. An AWS management account can't change the account name for its member accounts.

Note: The root user credentials are different than the account name. The root user logs in with the email and password that were used to first create the account. Also, you can't retrieve the initial password. To access the account as the root user for the first time, you must go through the password recovery process. For more information on how to change your Account Alias of custom URL, see About account aliases.

To change the name of an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) user, see Renaming an IAM user.

Resolution

  1. Use your root user credentials to sign in to the AWS account that you want to modify.
  2. Choose your name from the navigation bar, and then select Account.
  3. Next to Account Settings, choose Edit.
Note: If you aren't signed in as the root user, you don't see the Edit option.
  4. Enter the new AWS account name, and then choose Update.
Note: This method doesn't work if your AWS Organizations has service control policies (SCPs) that restrict access to the aws-portal. Instead, choose Security credentials in the AWS Management Console. Also, make sure that iam:UpdateAccountName isn't restricted by your SCPs.

The updated account name can take up to four hours to appear in the AWS Management Console.

Note: Changing the name of your AWS account doesn't affect any AWS Service you use in your account.

Hello, What is "the root user identity"? I changed the name account from 'xxxx' to 'yyy', but see that "Console sign-in link" is still https://xxxx.signin.aws.amazon.com/console. Will this change in time? Or this is the immutable "root user identity"?
