Why did I receive a bill after I closed my AWS account?

I closed my AWS account, but I received another bill. I want to know why I received the bill.

Resolution

You might receive a bill after you close your account because of one of the following reasons:

  • You incurred charges in the month before you closed your account: You receive a final bill for the usage that you incurred between the beginning of the month and the date that you closed your account. For example, if you closed your account on January 15, then you receive a bill for your usage from January 1 through January 15. You receive this bill at the beginning of February.
  • You have active Reserved Instances on your account: You might have provisioned Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Reserved Instances, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) Reserved Instances, Amazon Redshift Reserved Instances, or Amazon ElastiCache reserved nodes. You continue to receive a bill for these resources until the reservation period expires. For more information, see Reserved Instances.
  • You signed up for Savings Plans: You continue to receive a bill for your compute usage that's covered under Savings Plans until the plan's term is completed.
  • You have active AWS Marketplace subscriptions: Marketplace subscriptions aren't automatically canceled when you close your account. You must first terminate your software's instances in the subscriptions. Then, cancel subscriptions on the Manage subscriptions page of the AWS Marketplace console.
  • You have an active AWS Support plan subscription: AWS Support plan subscriptions, such as Developer and Business plans, aren't automatically canceled when you close your account. Before you close your account, you must downgrade to the Basic plan.

To view the AWS services that you use, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the AWS Management Console.
  2. Open the AWS Billing and Cost Management console.
  3. In the navigation pane, choose Bills.
  4. On the Bills page, under Charges by service, click the plus (+) icon to expand the AWS Region where the service is located.

Important: You have until 90 days after you close your account to sign in to your account, view past billing, and pay for AWS bills.

To pay your unpaid AWS bills, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Billing and Cost Management console.
  2. In the navigation pane, choose Payments. View your overdue bills in the Payments Due tab.
  3. Next to your unpaid bills, choose Verify and pay.

If the payment doesn't have Verify and pay next to it, then contact AWS Support and ask them to try the payment for you.
