Why does my EBS volume have a status of "error"?

My Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume has a status of “error”, and I don't know how to resolve it.

Short description

The error status indicates that the underlying hardware that's related to your EBS volume failed. The data that's associated with the volume is unrecoverable, and Amazon EBS processes the volume as lost. When a volume enters the error state, a notification appears on your account's AWS Health Dashboard.

Note: AWS doesn't bill for volumes that have the error status.

Resolution

It's a best practice to keep backups of your Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) resources, including EBS volumes. To avoid data loss, use Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager, AWS Backup, or EBS snapshots to maintain regular backups of your critical volumes. For more information, see Best practices for Amazon EC2.

Although you can't recover a volume in the error state, you can restore the lost data from your backup:

Note: If the volume that's in the error state is attached to an EC2 instance, then you might get an error when you start the instance. To resolve this issue, see How do I troubleshoot an Amazon EC2 instance that stops or terminates when I try to start it?
