Trustpilot, Building on AWS, Scales to House 190M Reviews That Help Consumers and Businesses to Make Better Decisions

Trustpilot lets consumers read and write reviews and find companies they can trust. These reviews help consumers be more confident in their purchasing decisions—and provide an opportunity for businesses to learn and improve from the feedback they receive.

Trustpilot director of engineering, Angela Timofte, shares how Trustpilot supports its mission to be the most recognized symbol of trust on the internet—between consumers and businesses—through the use of an event-driven architecture (EDA), powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Trustpilot grew to house over 190 million reviews, with 1.5 reviews created on its platform every second. Timofte shares how Trustpilot leverages EDA and Amazon DynamoDB (DynamoDB) on AWS by moving away from a monolithic architecture using on-premises databases to meet demand. Using serverless and database solutions on AWS, Trustpilot reliably scales to support unexpected peaks in user traffic.

Trustpilot also protects the integrity of its platform, using AWS analytics services for its compliance and fraud engines to screen 100% of reviews in near real time. With AWS, Trustpilot can rapidly grow and adapt to emerging challenges without impacting team productivity. As a company, it's able to ignite trust within the community, provide insights to businesses, and build confidence in consumer buying decisions.

Now, choosing the right data store has been a challenge in itself. As the number of reviews being read daily increased from thousands to millions, we had to find a scalable, flexible, and cost-effective database, and Amazon DynamoDB stood out as the right candidate."
