Overview
With Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, you pay only for the resources you use and there are no minimum fees or setup charges. While pricing is quoted on a monthly basis, your usage is prorated by the hour, and you are billed for your average usage over a month. You pay for the storage and throughput capacity that you specify for your file system, and for any backups of your file system. You will also pay for data transferred “in” to and “out” from Amazon FSx across Availability Zones (AZs) or VPC Peering connections in the same AWS Region and for data transferred “out” from Amazon FSx to other AWS Regions.

Categories
There are five categories to consider when storing and managing your data: storage capacity, SSD IOPS, throughput capacity, backups, and data transfer.
Data deduplication
Amazon FSx can also deduplicate and compress your data. Typical savings are as follows:
Content | Typical storage savings |
---|---|
Office documents, photos, music, and videos | 30-50% |
Software binaries, build files, and program symbols | 70-80% |
General-purpose file share contents (mix of the above) | 50-60% |

If you access your data from on premises using AWS VPN and AWS Direct Connect, the standard data transfer fees associated with those services apply.
Data transfer within the same AWS Region
There are no data transfer charges when accessing an Amazon FSx file system from the file system’s preferred AZ.
If you access your data from the same Region, but from an AZ other than your file system’s preferred AZ:
- For Multi-AZ file systems created on or after February 23, 2022, there are no data transfer charges.
- For Multi-AZ file systems created before February 23, 2022, or for Single-AZ file systems, you will be charged $0.01/GB in each direction.
Note that, for all Multi-AZ file systems, data transfer incurred for replication of data across AZs is included in the throughput capacity price.
Cross-Region data transfer pricing
*Assuming typical savings of 50% for general-purpose file share contents
Pricing example
Assume you want to store 10 TB of general-purpose file share data using HDD storage in the US East (N. Virginia) Region. Based on typical deduplication savings of 50-60%, you provision a 5 TB multi-AZ file system with 16 MBps of throughput capacity. Assume you have an average backup storage of 5 TB during the month.
Total monthly charge:
Storage: 5 TB * $0.025 GB-month= $128/mo
Throughput: 16 MBps * $4.50/MBps-month= $72/mo
Backup: 5 TB * $0.050/GB-month = $256/mo
Total monthly charge: $456 ($0.045/GB-mo for 10 TB of data)
