Readers in QuickSight can explore interactive dashboards, receive email reports, and download data. QuickSight offers two pricing models for Readers.

Amazon Q in QuickSight

Amazon Q in QuickSight is available as part of the 30-day Amazon QuickSight Enterprise Edition free trial for up to 4 users per QuickSight account. To try Amazon Q in QuickSight simply assign a Pro user role to the users participating in the free trial. User roles can be changed at any time.

Amazon Q in QuickSight provisions dedicated hardware capacity underneath the hood per customer to provide you consistently fast query performance. Amazon Q in QuickSight can be used by all users in the QuickSight account through data Q&A. (Note: a topic must be shared with users to start asking questions.) Additional Amazon Q in QuickSight capabilities are available to users with Pro user roles. The Amazon Q in QuickSight fee is billed per account per month and is billed each month that there are Pro users or topics within the account.

No. Customers pay the $250/month enablement fee per account even if the account spans multiple Regions.

Current Enterprise Edition customers will continue to be billed per the previous pricing plan till May 1, 2025 or can switch to our new pricing plan any time before that. On May 1, 2025, all customers will be transitioned to the new pricing model.

Yes, you can purchase Amazon Q questions in bulk with Amazon Q questions capacity pricing. Author Pro users can create and manage Amazon Q Topics allowing Q&A on specific data. Additional Amazon Q capabilities are currently only available through fixed-price Pro user roles.

Amazon Q in QuickSight is available in US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt) to start, with plans to expand to all current Amazon Q in QuickSight Regions.

Capacity pricing

Capacity pricing allows QuickSight customers to purchase Reader sessions or Amazon Q question capacity in bulk at discounted rates, without having to provision individual users in QuickSight. Capacity pricing is ideal for embedded applications or large-scale BI deployments.  With Capacity pricing, the per-session costs decrease with commitments to larger usage.

Capacity pricing is beneficial when QuickSight dashboards need to be displayed to a large audience with dispersed usage, or in situations where the user population is expected to continually grow. In both cases, the discounts on per-session pricing available with Capacity pricing allow reduction in QuickSight costs over time. Each session within session Capacity pricing is 30 minutes long. Session Capacity pricing also allows use of QuickSight for programmatic access for display on large screens or monitors for consumption by multiple end users.

A Reader session is a 30-minute interval of time during which a QuickSight Reader can access dashboards and interact with data when subscribed to Capacity pricing. A Reader session starts with user-initiated action (for example, login, dashboard load, page refresh, drill-down, or filtering) and runs for the next 30 minutes. Keeping QuickSight open in a background browser window or tab does not result in active sessions until the Reader initiates action on the page.

No, QuickSight being open in a background tab will not result in usage charges. A session is only initiated when there is explicit Reader activity on the QuickSight web application. If QuickSight is moved to the background or minimized, there will be no additional sessions charged until the Reader interacts with QuickSight again.

No, sessions are transparent to the end user. Sessions will be renewed in 30-minute intervals and time out 30 minutes after start upon inactivity. In case of embedded sessions, the host application will be responsible for renewing sessions based on setup.

QuickSight Reader user pricing applies to interactive consumption of data by individual users only — for both manual and programmatic access. For sharing of dashboards with multiple end users who are not registered in QuickSight, such as in an embedding scenario, use capacity pricing. See Service Term 40.4.

 

For scripted refresh of QuickSight dashboards intended for monitors or large screens that continuously display data, we recommend use of an Author account. QuickSight Reader user pricing applies to interactive consumption of data by individual end users in an organization. Reader sessions under capacity pricing are designed to be used in 30-minute intervals. A fair use policy applies, and any abuse of the system will result in the Reader being metered as an Author.

Upgrades and downgrades

Yes, Authors can be upgraded to Author Pro and Readers to Reader Pro or Author Pro at any time.

Yes, you can downgrade Author Pro to Author or Reader Pro to Reader at any time. Please note that monthly charge for the Pro versions will be charged for the full month.

No. You cannot downgrade an Author Pro to a Reader or Reader Pro. As an alternative, you can delete and readd users in different roles at any time.

The annual commitment plan will automatically be applied to month-to-month billed Authors when the annual commitment plan billing period begins.
