AXA is an insurer with more than 100 operating companies and entities in 60-plus countries, serving 106 million customers around the world. For AXA, creating technical standards to ensure consistency across the organization was critical. AXA turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to overcome this challenge by implementing a custom global landing zone using AWS services and best practices. By embedding its landing zone within the organization’s transformation program, AXA enabled local teams to autonomously test, validate, and propose changes to templates, while centrally monitoring adherence to detective and preventative controls.
According to Thomas Schelenz, head of public cloud services at AXA, “The global landing zone is a set of tools, automation, and concepts that allow any entity that wants to use AWS services to very quickly access them in a secure and compliant manner. It covers aspects like encryption, network configuration, IAM integration, and logging and monitoring of compliance.”
AXA already has deployed its global landing zone in more than 350 AWS accounts. At the end of 2019, the company had migrated 25 percent of its 6,000 eligible applications to the cloud. “We have a tech-led strategy, with cloud being one of the key pillars within that, and utilizing AWS services,” states Ash Shah, global move to the cloud director at AXA. “We implement new products in a far faster time that we could in the past. We’re utilizing new features such as machine learning, chatbots, and lots of business intelligence capabilities that AWS provides.”
